For Shirati Hospital in Tanzania Tweega Medica   Foundation is looking for a medical doctor specialised in Tropical Medicine/Global Health MD and his or her partner. *

Starting: asap 2026

Shirati Hospital is a district level hospital with 160 beds in the northern part of Tanzania on the shores of Lake Victoria. There is a male and female ward, an ICU, a neonatal ward, a maternity ward (around 280 deliveries per month) and a new neonatal intensive care unit. We perform surgeries (Caesarean section, laparotomy, hernia repair, skin grafting, external fixation etcetera) and have several out- patient clinics (HIV care, palliative care, physiotherapy and a sickle cell clinic).

Most patients we see live below the poverty line and make a living from fisheries and small-scale farming. We see a lot of infectious diseases like malaria, tuberculosis and HIV, children with malnutrition, trauma patients and increasing numbers of non-communicable diseases. There are several interesting and ongoing projects, like the schistosomiasis outreach project (mass drug administration), the healthy hearts project (cardiovascular risk factor screening), the Peanut Project (home-made RUTF for children with malnutrition) and the bonesetter project that strengthens cooperation between formal healthcare and traditional fracture healers.

Under the strong management of Doctor Chirangi (Medical Officer in Charge), the hospital has been moving forward. Recently we realized the construction of a neonatal ward with adequate and equipped nursing staff and with excitement we now look forward to further improvements.

Tweega Medica Foundation

Tweega Medica is a Dutch NGO that was founded in 2004. We send specialised medical doctors (MD Global Health/AIGT) to rural hospitals in Eastern Africa where critical shortages of medical doctors and personnel exist. Our doctors are sent out for missions of at least two years. Besides the clinical work, Tweega doctors organise and provide training and education for medical staff, they develop and participate in diverse hospital quality improvement projects, and their projects positively affect the health and wellbeing of the surrounding community. Tweega Medica aims for continuity and sustainability, and we focus on Mother and Child Healthcare.
